On September 19th, 2022, the Independence City Council adopted Resolution 6858 establishing the Independence FIFA World Cup Advisory Committee. In short, the committee was established to leverage the magnitude of this event for the benefit of Independence. 

As established, the committee of no more than 12 members, including the following:

• Institutional representatives from the City of Independence, the Independence Chamber of Commerce, the Harry S Truman Presidential Library and Museum, and the Independence hospitality industry.
• Two members from the City Council selected by a majority vote of the Council.
• Independence residents nominated by City Council members who are interested in serving and possess a breadth and depth of insight that will aid the Commission in its work.
• Representatives from youth sports leagues, particularly those involved in soccer.

In order to be more inclusive all community members and to foster the City Council's goal of enhanced community engagement, this resolution would amend Resolution 6858 in three ways:

1. Allow nonresidents to serve on the committee.
2. Expand the size of the committee from 12 to 21 members.
3. Afford each member of the City Council two appointments to the committee.
