Passage of this Resolution will establish a Public Art Policy for the City of Independence. The purpose of the Policy is to establish guidelines for the City's Public Art program, and provide direction to the Mayor's Advisory Commission on the Arts and City staff with regard to the installation and management of Public Art assets in Independence. |

For many years, the City of Independence has endeavored to promote Public Art in the community as a way to enhance the quality of life for residents and increase economic prosperity. Important milestones in this effort include the establishment of the Mayor's Advisory Commission on the Arts, Council adoption of the "1 Percent For The Arts" policy, creation of the Englewood Station Arts District, installation of art works at City facilities, creation of a Public Art website, support for both Visual and Performing Art initiatives, and the soon-to-be-launched Virtual Art Tour. The City has not, however, adopted a comprehensive Public Art Policy. The purpose of this Resolution is to adopt a Public Art Policy for the City of Independence which will establish guidelines for the management of public art assets and provide direction to the Mayor's Commission on the Arts and City staff with regard to the installation and management of Public Art assets. |
