Since 2005, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Department of the Interior has been working in cooperation with Municipal Services conducting monitoring of urban streams within Independence. The purpose of this program is to protect human health and the environment, monitor the effectiveness of the Cities’ Stormwater Management Plan, and meet Missouri Department of Natural Resources regulatory requirements.
USGS will continue to operate five continuous streamflow gaging stations and three continuous water-quality monitors, in addition to collecting and analyzing water quality samples from urban streams throughout the year.
The funds will be split as follows:
Year 1: City Share $327,100, USGS match $151,200
Year 2: City Share $297,300, USGS match $112,100
Year 3: City Share $302,400, USGS match $109,000
Year 4: City Share $313,600, USGS match $118,700
Year 5: City Share $150,600, USGS match $45,800
