In December 2020, Independence City Council authorized Ordinance No. 19188 which accepted funding in the amount of $242,000 from the US Department of Justice, US Marshals Service, through the Joint Law Enforcement Operations (JLEO) Task Force. The funding was designated for Operation LeGend, which was a partnership between federal agencies and local law enforcement to address the increasing violent crime and homicides in the Kansas City, MO area. The Independence Police Department has received a Modification Document from the US Marshals Service, which deobligates $212,000 of the original contract and ends that specific operation as of February 28, 2021. This leaves $30,000 to cover overtime worked from the original project period of November 5, 2020 to February 28, 2021.
In addition, the US Marshals Service has issued a new JLEO Obligation Document designating $130,000 for the revised project period of March 1, 2021 to September 30, 2021. This funding will continue to be used for overtime expenses incurred by the Independence Police Department while participating in the JLEO Task Force for the purpose of apprehending fugitives, improving public safety, and reducing violent crime.
The Modification Document and new Obligation Document are attached for review. This is to serve as notification in the overall reduction of funding from the JLEO Document that was originally authorized and accepted by City Council.
