IPL Capacity Update |
| | | | | | | | Executive Summary:
IPL is a participant in the Southwest Power Pool Integrated Market. The Market provides IPL with access to a regional pool of generation resources at an average cost consistently below national averages. This has provided IPL with significant savings since the Market's creation in 2014. In return, IPL is committed to maintaining a portfolio of generation and capacity resources for SPP's use, equal to 112% of our peak load. Maintaining that capacity obligation is the focus of current IPL planning efforts. |
| | | | | | | | Background:
The continuing advance of Renewable Generation has led to the early retirement of large fossil fuel power plants. However, due to the variable nature of wind/solar power, the capacity of the fossil plants has not be replaced 1:1. That has resulted in the potential for capacity shortfalls during peak conditions. Regional groups such as Southwest Power Pool and MISO are proposing changes to members' capacity obligations to ensure those shortfalls are prevented. |
