| | | | | | | | Background:
In the wake of the 2014 fatal police shooting of a young man named Michael Brown, the United States Department of Justice issued a report that was highly critical of the practices of the Ferguson, Missouri Police Department and the Ferguson, Missouri Municipal Court in March 2015. This event led to civil unrest in Ferguson and surrounding areas. In response to these events the Missouri General Assembly would over the next two years pass laws known as "Municipal Court Reform." These pieces of legislation are Missouri Senate Bill 5 adopted in 2015, and Missouri Senate Bill 572 adopted in 2016. |
