| | | | | | | | Executive Summary:
Critical Illness Trust and Pool is a state statute authorized Trust that the City of Independence can participate in presumptive cancer coverage for our firefighters. This coverage augments Workers Comp coverage in the case of specific cancers that have higher rates in firefighters due to their hazardous job exposures. |
| | | | | | | | Background:
IFD has previously had voluntary physicals that follow a NFPA standard. These generally scanned for major medical problems and early recognition of cancer. As part of a recent study done for ESCI, and priority of our Fire Department Strategic Plan (Objective 3.3 With labor/management collaboration, implement an annual/biannual physical fitness evaluation. (Recommendation 13 ESCI) we are implementing a mandatory Wellness Program to also help meet this goal. Adding the Critical Illness Pool not only requires this measure, but also helps our members immediate assistance if one of the covered cancers is found. |

Fiscal Impact:
The fiscal impact to the City is $ 28,000. Funding for Critical Illness Trust Pool is included in the FY 22-23 adopted budget, page number 163, account number 4671- 5226 Fire Protection Sales Tax.
The fiscal impact to the City is $ 125,000. Funding for Firefighter Physicals is included in the FY 22-23 adopted budget, page number 163, account number 4671- 5226 Fire Protection Sales Tax.
