Agenda Title:

The signature verification for the Initiative Petition-Repealing 3.03.006 of the City Code & Reviewing 3.03.007-3.03.009 of the City Code, from the Jackson County Board of Election Commissioners has been received by the City Clerk.
Background:

Per 7.3 of the City Charter an initiative petition shall be signed by a number of registered qualified voters of the city equal at least to five (5) percent of the total number of qualified voters registered at the time of the last general city election.

The City Clerk received 610 pages of petitions on May 1, 2023.  On May 4, 2023 the Jackson County Election Board confirmed that the petition had 3,740 valid signatures.  The number of signatures needed to meet the 5% voter requirement was 3,160.

Per 7.6 of the City Charter within thirty (30) days after receiving notification from the city clerk that an initiative or referendum petition is sufficient, the council shall pass the initiated ordinance as proposed by the initiative petition or pass an ordinance repealing the ordinance sought to be referred, as the case may be; or shall submit the initiated ordinance or the ordinance sought to be referred to the registered qualified voters of the city at an election which shall be held not less than thirty (30) days and not more than ninety (90) days after receiving such notification from the city clerk. 

 

This item hereby serves as the notification to the City Council.
