In August 2022, the Independence Police Department joined with Jackson County, Missouri, Kansas City, Missouri, and the cities of Grandview and Raytown to submit an application for the Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program. This program is used by the Department of Justice to assist state and local law enforcement efforts to prevent or reduce crime and violence, and is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to states and units of local government. Award amounts are based on a statutory formula and determined by the Bureau of Justice Assistance and Bureau of Justice Statistics.
The total amount that has been awarded to the Jackson County, Missouri area and the agencies listed above is $678,136, and the Independence portion is $61,032.00. The Police Department intends to use this funding for law enforcement related equipment. Specifically, the department will focus on traffic enforcement and monitoring equipment to include speed measuring devices. The overall goal will be to improve public safety by expanding visible traffic enforcement and increase enforcement efforts in locations determined to be high problem areas or complaint areas within the City. |
