On June 20th, 2023, a class action lawsuit was filed by Trevor Tilton et al against Jackson County et al. The suit alleges that the defendants actions have resulted in "illegal and unlawful increases in the assessed value of real property through Jackson County, thereby threatening class members with imminent harm in the form of unlawful and illegal tax increases". This class action is brought on behalf of all owners of property in Jackson County who as of June 15th, 2023 did not receive notice of an increase in their valuation.

If approved, this resolution would direct the City Manager to consult with the City Counselor to explore the possibility of joining the class action lawsuit that has been filed against Jackson County for the "arbitrary and capricious" nature of the assessment process. The City Council would then be advised as to whether the City has standing to join the lawsuit, the potential merits and consequences of joining the lawsuit, and the financial impact of joining the lawsuit.
