Agenda Title:

23-086 2R An ordinance authorizing the City Clerk to do all things necessary for the holding of a Primary and General City Election within the City of Independence, Missouri, in compliance with the Charter adopted by said City, as amended, and all state laws in reference thereto, and to certify to the Jackson County Board of Election Commissioners all names of candidates properly presented by petitions under the Charter and for the holding of a Primary Election on February 6, 2024, and a General Election on April 2, 2024.
Recommendations:

Approval of this ordinance to establish the election calendar for the 2024 District Councilmember election is recommended.

General Election

 

Missouri Election Law and Campaign Financial Disclosure Law call for the financial reports of candidates to be made to the Jackson County Board of Election Commissioners and Missouri Ethics Commission.  The City Clerk offers assistance to candidates by making a packet of forms available.  The materials provided include the required petition blanks, Charter excerpts, Disclosure Law materials, and this ordinance.  A list of names will be retained of those who file with the City Clerk the required nominating petitions, notarized Declaration of Candidacy form, and signed Notice to Candidate form. 



Fiscal Impact:

The Election Board invoices the City for the City's proportionate share of the actual costs associated with these elections. The expense will be charged to the 23-24 Proposed/Adopted Budget General Fund -Mayor and City Council, page 182 in 002-5226-Clerk Professional Services account.
