Agenda Title:

The Municipal Services Department is notifying Council of an agreement with the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) for Independence’s participation in the Intergovernmental Agreement relating to disposal of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). The Cost to the City is $136,958.30.

Recommendations:

Staff is providing notification to the City Council of this expenditure.

Background:

The City participates in an annual household hazardous waste event which is scheduled for Saturday, May 4th. This event allows citizens an opportunity to properly dispose of chemicals that otherwise maybe dumped or discarded in ways that could negatively impact the environment, city’s sanitary sewer, or storm sewer systems. Chemicals that are accepted include paint, antifreeze, oil, gasoline, pesticides, batteries, medications, and other household and lawn & garden chemicals. In addition to the drive up HHW event this contract gives Independence residences free access to hazardous waste drop off locations in Lee’s Summit and Kansas City year-round.

The City needed to return this agreement to MARC in advance of the HHW event.



Fiscal Impact:

The fiscal impact to the City is $136,958.30. Funding for the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) event is included in the fiscal year 2023-24 adopted budget, page 180, account number (0305210-5213), Dues and memberships.
